Actors like Jason Bateman, Amy Poehler, Colin Farrell, Jude Law, Jennifer Garner, Ryan Reynolds, Kyra Sedgwick, Zoe Saldana, husband and wife team Taye Diggs and Idina Menzel, Wanda Sykes, Anna Faris, Terrence Howard and names from “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Modern Family,” “The View,” Food Network, “Today,” “The Insider” and “American Idol’s” Kara DioGuardi have all signed on to appear in different episodes of the PBS Kids television program.

Music and sports stars weren’t left off either, with Katy Perry, Reverend Run, Usher, will.i.am and NFL players Reggie Bush and LaDainian Tomlinson also on slate.

Some original pop culture parodies will include “True Mud” (“True Blood”), “The Furry Four” (as opposed to the Fab Four), “Ironing Monster” (“Iron Man”), “The Closer” (well, “The Closer”) and “A Team” (you get the idea). Reynolds will star in the latter, as the letter A.

Other teased highlights from the science-centered season include the new recurring segment “Super Grover 2.0” and some short films with NASA.

Not to sound creepy, but we’re following Anna Faris into her bedroom…or trying to, at least. “I have to show you something!” she shouts as she leaps over a doggy gate. Once we catch up, she sprints past the bed she shares with her husband, actor Chris Pratt, opens her closet, and retrieves a pair of 6-inch bedazzled red patent leather heels.

“Every woman needs a pair,” Anna says as she holds up the soft-core-porn equivalent of Dorothy’s ruby slippers, “and Chris totally loves it when I wear them.”

Anna is, of course, joking around (about the first part, not the second). The shoes were part of her wardrobe when she played an ex-Playboy Playmate in the movie The House Bunny, but tonight, Anna’s outfit is a little more low-key: a tee shirt and jeans underneath a greenstriped apron, with her hair pulled into a loose whiteblond bun. As we walk back to the kitchen of her cozy home—she’s roasting us a chicken for dinner—we notice an actual cat skeleton posed on her mantle not far from photographs of her gorgeous mom. Uh, who does that?

That’s also a question you might ask yourself while watching one of Anna’s audacious performances. And the answer is: Nobody but her.

Channeling a Private Benjamin–era Goldie Hawn, interweaving her bottle-blond sex appeal and innate dorkiness to make us laugh until we hurt, Anna Faris has always been one of those genius comedic talents who doesn’t get enough screen time. Maybe because her trademark ditz humor—off-kilter in the best possible way—is just too…smart? She proved slapstick wasn’t a guys-only game in the Scary Movie franchise, provided levity in Lost in Translation as a dim-witted starlet, and in the obscure but brilliant stoner film Smiley Face, her take on the archetypal lovable pothead put everyone in Pineapple Express to shame. Thankfully, we saw more of her (lots more) in 2008’s The House Bunny. In the guilty-pleasure comedy produced by Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison films, Faris outshone the script as an ousted Playboy pet named Shelley who rescues a sorority from eternal nerdom by becoming a den mother.

The 32-year-old Seattle-bred actress originally came up with the idea of Shelley before pitching it to Sandler (in full costume, no less) and is ready to take matters into her own hands again. “I need to create more of the roles that I want to play, because there just aren’t that many out there for comedic women,” Faris says. “Will Ferrell, Ben Stiller—they create their own stuff. Maybe it’s up to comedians to take the reins.” Fine by us if she wants to become the female version of Seth Rogen, with whom she costars in this month’s Observe and Report. It’s a dark, dark comedy about a wayward mall cop and his dream date, Brandi, a drug-loving makeup-counter girl whom Faris deems “horrible.” So will she be funny and evil? “My job is to get the audience to hate me,” Faris says. “I was kind of giggling the whole time at how naughty I get to be.”

If you’re Anna Faris and you’re hanging out with Seth Rogen on the set of your new film, one of the things you’re almost certain to wind up talking about is marijuana. Specifically, you’ll find yourself competing over who has won more Stony Awards, High Times magazine’s equivalent to the Oscar. (It’s a bong.) “Seth’s won more—like three,” says Faris. “Mine’s up on the mantel. And occasionally, it gets used.”

Faris, 32, may be slightly off Rogen’s pace, but she more than holds her own opposite him in Observe and Report, a raunchy comedy where he’s a delusional mall cop and she’s the trashy department-store makeup artist he loves. In the film’s funniest scene, she agrees to a pity date with Rogen, pounds tequila shots, and swallows a bunch of his antidepression meds. “I get wasted and I throw up and we have sex,” she says. It’s the kind of scene-stealing comedic performance Faris has been nailing since mocking Cameron Diaz types in Lost in Translation, despite her own hesitations. “At first I thought, I gotta find my footing in drama,” she says. “It took two years to say, ‘I love comedy. Why am I fighting it?’ ”

We couldn’t agree more. Lately, she’s been devoting more energy to producing her own projects, like last year’s The House Bunny—which cost lunch money to make and grossed $50 million. She’s also working on an autobiographical comedy, one based in part on her college days. “It’ll be the highlights of my wilder times,” she says. “I drifted in and out of different social circles—you know, the hippies, the ravers, the dorm rats…” Wait, wild times with the dorm rats? Explain. “Well, there was a lot of weed involved.”

Anna is going to be the host on this week’s episode of “Saturday Night Live”! The show will air on the NBC network at 11:30pm on September 27th and is an hour and a half long. I’ll be looking for a video of the show to capture and clip, so keep posted!

To hear Anna Faris speak is to realize that playing dumb is more complicated than it looks. The actress, cool and slender as the bottle of water she’s drinking, is in a Hollywood bar, talking about why she’s scornful of monologues and how all acting is about human interaction. “The script isn’t as important as what actors do together,” she says. “It’s the dynamic between people.”

There’s a pause. Faris feels obliged to explain the origins of her theory. “Everyone in my family is a sociologist,” she says. “My brother, my dad, one of my grandfathers—everybody.” She knows that as she’s saying this you’re probably thinking about her goofier onscreen exploits, like the scene in Scary Movie 4 in which a green hand emerges from behind her to shave her armpits.

Faris’ career has been built on such golden cinematic moments (a fifth Scary Movie is on the way) in masterpieces like Smiley Face, in which she plays a stoner who fries cannabis in butter for breakfast, and Just Friends, in which she’s a pop diva who sets her private jet on fire by leaving the tinfoil on her microwave dinner. In The House Bunny, out this month, Faris, 31, portrays a Playboy Bunny who gets booted from the mansion and ends up in a sorority house—as they like to say in Hollywood, The Battleship Potemkin it’s not.

“You watch some of Anna’s movies and you think, hmm. Kinda wacky, right?” says Luke Wilson, Faris’ costar in My Super Ex-Girlfriend. “Turns out she’s sharp as a tack and really has her shit together.” Faris majored in English at the University of Washington, and her acting chops have impressed Sofia Coppola, who cast her in Lost in Translation, and Ang Lee, who put her in Brokeback Mountain. As she says, “That version of me onscreen? It’s me at work.”

It was Faris who cooked up the premise for The House Bunny and who was savvy enough to enlist the writers from Legally Blonde to get it on the page. Then she pitched the project to Adam Sandler’s production company. Within three months, she was shooting at the mansion with Hef, having added a lead role and a producing credit to her résumé. “Anna’s relentless on the cell phone,” says Colin Hanks, who costars in The House Bunny. “She’s a player.”

What you see onscreen, though, is what you see in person: long, blond curls that frame enormous blue eyes in a way that makes her a dead ringer for Goldie Hawn in her spacey prime. Not that Faris remembers the image. As a kid growing up in a small town north of Seattle, she was forbidden to watch television and movies. “My brother and I ran around in the woods or we made up plays. It was all a little sheltered,” she says. For a long time, Faris was a wallflower.

“I felt like the girl that guys befriended to get close to my beautiful girlfriends,” she says. “When I finally did start to feel attractive, I went overboard. I started dressing in these tiny schoolgirl outfits. I liked getting attention, but I think I was expressing anger by showing my body. That’s why I didn’t have a lot of girlfriends in college.”

Faris, who divorced actor Ben Indra earlier this year, is now “seeing someone great,” disclosing only that he’s an actor. “I caught him the other night at a bar having a conversation with two girls,” she says. “I called him and he admitted it. I was annoyed at first, but then I realized, it’s cool. Most guys wouldn’t have answered the phone—and he deserves to feel attractive. So good for him . . . the fucker.”

That little kicker is telling, since comic timing is as much a part of her success as looks are. “It confuses people if you do comedy and you’re sexy, but I like to play with that,” she says. “We’re not programmed to think that pretty women can have interesting ideas.”

Now Faris is hanging with the coolest young comic minds in town—Seth Rogen (whom she’s starring opposite in Observe and Report, due next year), Judd Apatow, and company. They’re the sort of friends Faris knows she can learn from as she strives for career longevity. “To me, the one to watch is Betty White,” Faris says. “The woman’s been doing comedy for more than 60 years. I’d take some of that action.”
