If you’re Anna Faris and you’re hanging out with Seth Rogen on the set of your new film, one of the things you’re almost certain to wind up talking about is marijuana. Specifically, you’ll find yourself competing over who has won more Stony Awards, High Times magazine’s equivalent to the Oscar. (It’s a bong.) “Seth’s won more—like three,” says Faris. “Mine’s up on the mantel. And occasionally, it gets used.”
Faris, 32, may be slightly off Rogen’s pace, but she more than holds her own opposite him in Observe and Report, a raunchy comedy where he’s a delusional mall cop and she’s the trashy department-store makeup artist he loves. In the film’s funniest scene, she agrees to a pity date with Rogen, pounds tequila shots, and swallows a bunch of his antidepression meds. “I get wasted and I throw up and we have sex,” she says. It’s the kind of scene-stealing comedic performance Faris has been nailing since mocking Cameron Diaz types in Lost in Translation, despite her own hesitations. “At first I thought, I gotta find my footing in drama,” she says. “It took two years to say, ‘I love comedy. Why am I fighting it?’ ”
We couldn’t agree more. Lately, she’s been devoting more energy to producing her own projects, like last year’s The House Bunny—which cost lunch money to make and grossed $50 million. She’s also working on an autobiographical comedy, one based in part on her college days. “It’ll be the highlights of my wilder times,” she says. “I drifted in and out of different social circles—you know, the hippies, the ravers, the dorm rats…” Wait, wild times with the dorm rats? Explain. “Well, there was a lot of weed involved.”
